The Challenge
The Australian Red Cross faced multiple challenges that necessitated a transition from AWS to Azure. Primarily, they sought to align their IT infrastructure with Microsoft’s suite of services, enabling cost savings through more efficient licensing, particularly with SQL. Additionally, ARC lacked the in-house technical skills required to undertake such a significant migration. There was also a need for enhanced governance to ensure compliance and security across their cloud infrastructure. These factors, combined with a strategic push towards modernising their digital capabilities, made the migration imperative.

The Strategic Migration
Following a recommendation from Microsoft, ARC engaged with cubesys, leveraging their expertise in cloud migration and legacy environment complexities. cubesys collaborated with various ARC departments to fully understand their business requirements and future state needs for their Azure environment.
cubesys deployed an Azure Landing Zone with comprehensive governance, providing ARC with a solid foundation to build and grow their Azure capabilities. The migration was facilitated using Azure Migrate, with cubesys also providing the necessary skills uplift to address ARC’s concerns about replicating PaaS components in Azure.
Final Outcome
The implemented solution equipped ARC with a well-considered and practical foundational environment within Azure, supporting continued growth on the platform. Key outcomes included:
- Governance: Through the Azure Landing Zone and Azure Policy.
- Infrastructure as Code: Established via Azure DevOps practices.
- Monitoring: Enabled for all migrating resources with Azure Monitor.
- Migration: Successfully transitioned from AWS Elastic Compute instances to Azure Virtual Machines, alongside PaaS components like Load Balancers, Perimeter Security, Storage, and Certificate Storage to Azure equivalents.
